
Warriors Compete at Doane Hosted Open
CRETE, Neb. – No. 15-ranked Midland University sent seven wrestlers to the Conner/Oppenheim Open on Saturday, hosted by Doane University at the Fuhrer Fieldhouse. The women's competition featured 370 athletes.
At 103 pounds, Kyra Gonzalez went 0-2 for Midland. In the first round, she lost to Erin Hikiji of the University of Providence, the nation's top-ranked wrestler, by technical fall, 10-0. In the first consolation round, Gonzalez suffered another technical fall loss, 10-0, to Melanie Fragua of Trinidad State.
Competing at 117 pounds, Destiny Castillo received a first-round bye but lost to Bailey Cash of Iowa Western Community College by fall at 3:33. After a second-round bye in the consolation bracket, Castillo forfeited her match to Olivia Maxney-Ladson of Waldorf.
Three Warriors took to the mat in the 131-pound division. Keira Nartatez lost her opening match to No. 15-ranked Jumoke Adekoye of Dickinson State by technical fall, 10-0. After a first-round bye in the consolation bracket, Nartatez was pinned by Mackenzie English of the University of Providence at 2:08.
Taylor Hood started her day with a first-round bye and then fell to Janie Houser of Menlo College by technical fall, 10-0, in the second round. Hood rebounded in the consolation bracket, pinning Paige Trainor of Grand View at 3:46 in the second round and earning a 12-4 decision over Aileya Sath of Baker University in the third. Her run ended in the fourth consolation round with a loss by fall to Olivia Sandoval of Carl Albert at 1:09.
Eny Bravo also competed at 131 pounds, going 0-2. Bravo was pinned by Adilene Delgadillo of Morningside in 34 seconds in the first round. After a consolation-round bye, Bravo lost by technical fall, 10-0, to Amaria Ridgner of Indian Hills.
Andrea Frisque, ranked No. 19 at 138 pounds, had a tough day on the mat. She lost by fall to Kaianne Sabagala of the University of Providence at 3:43 in the first round. In the consolation bracket, Frisque was narrowly defeated, 12-8, by Daeja Sundquist of Iowa Western Community College.
At 160 pounds, Ja'nya Banks began her day with a first-round bye. She then pinned Jessica Mendieta of Menlo College at 3:48 in the second round and defeated Margaret Jordan of Carl Albert, 5-1, in the third. Banks advanced to the quarterfinals, where she lost by fall to No. 12-ranked Darby Weidl of Ottawa University at 2:56. Her tournament ended in the consolation bracket with a loss by fall to Ayana Fletcher of Iowa Western Community College at 1:27.
The Warriors will return to dual competition on Tuesday when they host Waldorf in Great Plains Athletic Conference action. The first bout is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. inside the Wikert Event Center in Fremont, Neb.
