HASTINGS, Neb. – Midland University traveled to face Hastings College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) match on Wednesday evening. The Broncos, who are leading the conference standings, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring quickly at the start of each half. The Warriors mounted a strong comeback in the final 30 minutes, netting two goals to level the score and earn a 2-2 draw.
Hastings scored a goal in the 9th minute, capitalizing on a deflected save to find the back of the net and take a 1-0 lead in the first half. The Broncos maintained control throughout the first 45 minutes, dominating with a 9-3 advantage in shot attempts, and 5-0 on frame.
Following the intermission, Hastings quickly struck again in the 48th minute, as the ball went into the net off a wicked deflection extending the Broncos' lead to 2-0.
Aminata Lewis put the Warriors on the board in the 63rd minute as she collected the ball off the rebound of the Hastings goalkeeper to send it to the back of the net. Rosa Schellmann scored the equalizer in the 77th minute with a free kick following a Hastings' foul. She found the back of the net and leveled the score at 2-2.
The match turned into a fierce back-and-forth battle, with Hastings nearly scoring again in the final seconds as a shot hit the crossbar. Midland quickly cleared the ball, securing a hard-fought draw.
"Against all odds, we exceeded our own abilities and stole the first points of the season from the top team in the conference with a draw.," commented head coach Keri Heedum.
Midland (2-2-3, 2-2-3 GPAC) will be on the road this weekend as it travels to take on Dakota Wesleyan (4-6-0, 3-4-0 GPAC). The conference matchup is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on October 19 in Mitchell, South Dakota.
