Warriors Douse Flames, Punch Ticket to Semifinals
FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University hosted the College of Saint Mary in the quarterfinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament on Thursday. The 3rd-seeded Warriors blitzed past the 6th-seeded Flames, winning 4-0 to advance to the next round of the postseason tournament.
Aminata Lewis got the Warriors started in the first half as she collected the ball off the Flames' defender 20-yard out. As she spun towards the middle of the field, she sent the ball soaring into the back of the net in the 17th minute. Midland held the advantage up to halftime, leading 1-0.
Through the first period, the Warriors led in shot attempts, with eight, holding the Flames to just one.
Midland added to its tally in the second half as Sydney Herren scored a goal in the 70th minute. Shortly after, Hanna Schimmer collected the ball off a throw-in to score in the 84th minute. Three minutes later, Schimmer extinguished any hope of a comeback as she scored the final goal off an assist from Herren.
The Warriors had a massive lead in shot attempts on the night, 21-4, and had an 8-2 edge in shots on frame.
Kyla Pires earned the shutout win by playing the full 90 minutes, picking up two saves on the night.
"Very happy with tonight's performance from the girls. The game started off a bit frantic and direct, but they eventually settled in," commented interim head coach Tatum Tremain. "As a team, we came into this game wanting to prove what we can do. The scoreboard really showed that we were the better team tonight. I couldn't be prouder of the girls and I can't wait for the next game."
Midland (11-4-4) advances to the GPAC Semifinals where they'll take on 2nd-seeded Concordia (13-3-3). Next Tuesday, the Warriors will load up and take the short trip to Seward, Nebraska to take on the Bulldogs. The matchup is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Bulldogs Stadium on Tuesday, November 7.
