Warriors Dominate in Win Over Spires

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Madilynn Edwards and Chloe Harrison led Midland University to a 16-3 victory on Sunday afternoon over the University of Saint Mary at Charles Berkel Memorial Stadium. Edwards, who has scored in six straight matches, tallied four goals, while Harrison added three for the Midland offense.

Jewell Milliman started the scoring on the afternoon, 44 seconds into the contest. The Spires tied the game with 12:48 left in the first when Scarlet Minix recorded an unassisted goal to make it 1-1. Midland took the lead for good when Alexis Marshall scored with 10:41 left in the quarter. Then, Madilynn Edwards recorded her first goal of the day, on a free position shot, with 3:08 left in the first. Midland took a 3-1 lead into the quarter break.

The Warriors scored the first four goals of the second quarter. Chloe Harrison scored twice, in a span of thirty-five seconds, to put Midland up 5-1. Four minutes later, Ryland Nelson and Edwards scored 23 seconds apart, to make it a 7-1 Warrior lead. USM would find the back of the net before halftime, as Makayla Mason scored with 3:36 left in the quarter. The score remained the same going to halftime, with Midland leading 7-2.

The two teams shared goals in the first six minutes of the third quarter. Jewell Milliman scored off a Ryland Nelson assist with 11:02 left in the third, to make it 8-2. Makayla Mason scored for USM on a free position shot with 9:07 left in the quarter, to make it 8-3. Mason's goal would be the final one scored by the Spires on the afternoon. Alexis Marshall and Madigan Marusiak added a goal each before Edwards scored two more goals, thirty-six seconds apart, to put Midland up 12-3 with 5:13 left in the quarter. Caitlin Bowers added a goal for the Warriors with 2:01 remaining, to make the score 13-3, which would stand until the end of the third.

Midland added three fourth-quarter goals as Ashley Boyd, Chloe Harrison, and Madigan Marusiak all netted a goal to make the final score, 16-3.

The Warriors outshot the Spires on the afternoon, 29 to 18. In goal, Midland's Christina Myers picked up the win. She stopped six USM attempts on the day. St. Mary, who won 13 of the 24 draw controls on the day, struggled with ball control, turning it over 27 times. USM's Makayla Mason scored two of the Spires' goals. Marisol Vargas took the loss, in net. She recorded one save on the afternoon.

Midland (6-2, 6-2 KCAC) returns to action on Wednesday, March 20th, when the Warriors host Mount Mercy in non-conference action. Action begins at 4 p.m., at Heedum Field, in Fremont.
