Warriors Take Third at Home Event
OMAHA, Neb. – Midland University opened up its bowling season as it hosted the 2023 Warrior Open at Mockingbird Lanes in Omaha. The Warriors had a strong showing in their first event of the season as they placed third behind team-champion Coe College and Hastings College.
During Saturday's competition, Kaylee Bergstrom had a great start to her junior season with a score of 987 (197.4 average) to place 4th individually and claim her first All-Tournament Team finish. Jerika Koopmeiners was the next highest Warrior with a score of 917 (183.4 avg.) and a placing of 9th. Victoria Cruz Cervantes just missed the top ten with a score of 882 (176.4 average) for 12th place.
Others competing for MU on day one included Emily Ziegler (34th, 674), Ashland Hoyt (41st, 505), and Samantha Creutz (43rd, 480).
On Sunday, the teams competed in 16 baker games. Midland rolled a team score of 2810 in baker play for a total of 7255. Hastings edged them for second place with a score of 7281 while Coe's pinfall of 7578 won the team title.
"We had a strong season opener with the women finishing third," commented head coach Britney Brown. "We were just a few pins (26) behind second place. It was great to see Kaylee earn her first all-tournament team. This was a great event to host and it wouldn't have been possible without the strong community that supports our program. I am looking forward to the upcoming practices as we prepare for our next event."
Up next for Midland is the Mid-States Championships next month. The weekend event will take place on October 21-22 at West Acres Bowl in Wichita, Kansas.
