Mustangs Pull Away Early, Top Warriors in GPAC Play

HASTINGS, Neb. – Midland University continued Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play with a midweek contest at Hastings College on Wednesday night. The Warriors fought hard early but were outpaced offensively by the Broncos, falling 79-52.

Grace Holm opened the scoring with a three-pointer to give Midland the lead, but Hastings quickly responded with back-to-back threes to take a 6-3 advantage. A three-pointer by Ellie Bovaird later in the quarter pulled the Warriors within one, but Hastings then went on an 11-2 run to close the quarter with a 22-15 lead.

An Erin Foxhall basket and a Jenna Weber three-pointer brought the Warriors within five early in the second quarter, but the Broncos responded with another scoring run and entered halftime with a 43-26 lead.

Hastings extended its lead with a 9-2 run to start the third quarter. Both teams tightened up defensively in the period, combining for just 24 points. The Broncos outscored the Warriors 14-10, sending the game into the final quarter with a 57-36 advantage.

Midland scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, but Hastings countered with four of their own. The Broncos continued to control the pace, outscoring the Warriors 22-16 in the final frame to secure the 79-52 victory.

Jenna Weber led the Warriors in scoring with 14 points, followed by Erin Foxhall with 12. Sarah Shepard contributed four points, a team-high eight rebounds, and two assists.

For the game, Midland shot 19-of-54 (35.2%), while Hastings shot 30-of-68 (44.1%). The Broncos attempted more three-pointers, but the Warriors were more efficient, shooting 6-of-16 (37.5%) compared to Hastings' 11-of-35 (31.4%).

Midland (1-15, 1-9 GPAC) will stay on the road this weekend, traveling to Sioux City, Iowa, to face Morningside (8-8, 6-4 GPAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
