No. 5 Concordia Overpowers Warriors in Conference Action
SEWARD, Neb. — Midland University faced another challenge in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play on Tuesday night, traveling to take on No. 5 Concordia University. The Bulldogs proved too strong, handing the Warriors a 92-41 defeat.
"We want to give our university and community a team to be proud of, and we didn't do that tonight," said head coach Chris Burks.
Midland opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Zoey Sims, but Concordia quickly responded with two layups, a pair of threes, and a free throw to build an 11-5 lead midway through the first quarter. Both teams played solid defense early, with the Bulldogs recording eight steals in the opening period. However, the Warriors controlled the boards, outrebounding Concordia 14-9. The Bulldogs led 17-10 heading into the second quarter.
Concordia pulled away early in the second with an 8-0 run before a three-pointer by Grace Holm and a layup by Jenna Weber trimmed the deficit to 10 points with seven minutes remaining in the half. However, Concordia's sharp shooting—particularly from beyond the arc—allowed them to extend their lead. They headed into halftime up 40-20.
Despite three more three-pointers from Holm in the third quarter, the Bulldogs continued to dominate, outscoring Midland 29-17 over the 10-minute stretch. Concordia entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 69-37 advantage.
The Bulldogs' defense clamped down in the final frame, limiting the Warriors to just four points. Concordia sealed the victory with a final score of 92-41.
"We will be ready for our next game and will show more effort," said Burks.
Holm led Midland with 15 points, connecting on 5-of-9 attempts from three-point range. She also added five rebounds and two steals in 35 minutes of action. Sims contributed seven points and a team-high seven rebounds in 33 minutes on the floor.
Midland struggled offensively as a team, shooting 23.7% from the field (14-of-59) and 29.9% from three-point range (7-of-26). Concordia, on the other hand, shot an efficient 50.7% overall (35-of-69) and an impressive 57.1% from deep (12-of-21).
"Changes will be made, and a better effort will come on Saturday. We appreciate all those who watch us and show us support," Burks concluded.
Midland (1-6) will step out of conference play on Saturday, November 30, traveling to face Jamestown (4-1). Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. inside Harold Newman Arena in Jamestown, North Dakota.
