
Warriors Fall to No 18 Morningside in Conference Opener
FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University opened Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play on Sunday, hosting No. 18-ranked Morningside University inside the Fremont Family YMCA. The Warriors battled but ultimately fell to the Mustangs, 5-2, in the conference opener for both teams.
Midland started strong in doubles play, securing the opening point with a pair of victories. Benjamin Starman and Joren Stevens earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Alexis Diaz and Marcos Menendez Hervella of Morningside took the No. 2 spot with a 6-2 decision over Daniel Liebig and Martin Cisneros. The Mustangs clinched the doubles point at No. 3, as Jesse Gerth and Mathys Arnold blanked Cayden Brandner-Stanton and Paul Maynard, 6-0.
In singles action, Stevens and Starman notched wins for Midland. Stevens defeated Mark Trenkle in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1, while Starman cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Menendez Hervella at No. 2.
Morningside took control in the remaining singles matches, winning at No. 3 through No. 6 to claim the overall team victory. Diaz outlasted Liebig at No. 3 in a competitive 6-3, 7-5 match, while Santiago Minetti edged Cisneros at No. 4 by a 7-6, 6-2 scoreline. Arnold and Gerth closed out the match with dominant performances at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, as Arnold shut out Brandner-Stanton, 6-0, and Gerth topped Christian Ayala, 6-1.
Midland (4-7, 0-1 GPAC) will look to bounce back next weekend with a pair of nonconference matchups. The Warriors will travel to Missouri to take on No. 17 Williams Woods (9-5) in Fulton on Saturday and then face (RV) Missouri Baptist (8-4) on Sunday in St. Louis.
