
Warriors Earn Shutout Win on Senior Day
FREMONT, Neb. – Over the weekend, Midland University closed out its regular season with a home contest against Cottey College. The Warriors controlled both sides of the ball, downing the Comets by a score of 27-0. Prior to the game, Mikaela Nunez was honored as the lone senior on this year's team.
Midland scored on its opening drive, going 66 yards in 8 plays. Angel Ioane Kaio completed three passes including a 40-yard touchdown to Olivia Dominguez-Millsop. The point-after-attempt was good, giving them a 7-0 lead with 7:52 left in the opening quarter.
After limiting the Comets to a three-and-out, the Warriors raced down the field for their second score of the day. It took four plays to score with Ioane Kaio finding Cydnee Redd for a 21-yard touchdown. The PAT was good and Midland led 14-0 with just under two minutes to go in the first.
Before the end of the quarter, the Warriors found the endzone a third time. After a punt by Cottey, an eight-play drive by Midland resulted in six points. Ioane Kaio hit Emily Ferron for a seven-yard touchdown and the Warriors took a 20-0 lead into the second quarter and maintained the advantage up to halftime.
In the second half, Midland found the endzone just once. Just before the end of the third quarter, Ioane Kaio found Alyssa Butler for a 12-yard score to cap off an eight-play drive.
Angel Ioane Kaio threw for 227 yards on 20-of-33 passing with 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions and also ran the ball 4 times for a team-high 38 yards.
On the receiving end of the touchdown passes were Olivia Dominquez-Millsop (3 catches for 53 yards, TD), Cydnee Redd (3 for 35 yards, TD), Alyssa Butler (2 for 13 yards, TD), and Emily Ferron (3 for 10 yards, TD). Allaya Livingston had 3 catches for 51 yards and Myana Sigers had 3 receptions for 34 yards.
Defensively, Redd led the way with 11 tackles. Ferron was the next highest with 3 tackles.
Midland (9-5) will look to build upon the momentum from its win in next weekend's Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Tournament. The Warriors are the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 5 seed Southwestern (5-7) in the first round. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Games will be played at the Paragon Sports Complex on day one with the KCAC Championship set for a 3:00 p.m. start on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
