Warriors Open Season at FHSU Invitational Shoot

HAYS, Kan. – Midland University took to the range down in Kansas over the weekend as it opened up its 2023-24 season at the Fort Hays State University Invitational. The Warriors had 20 shooters in the event that featured doubles skeet, team trap, doubles trap, and sporting clays. After the smoke cleared, Midland found itself in second place with a score of 1629. Fort Hays won the team HOA with a score of 1654 while Concordia University rounded out the top three with a score of 1572.

The Warriors had runner-up finishes in both doubles skeet and doubles trap. In the skeet competitions, the group of Mason Andelin, Adin Doll, Amy Cawley, Chase Carrere, and Sarah Sjoberg combined for a score of 241. In trap, it was Brayden Bliss, Devin Huguenot, Ben Swanson, Grayson Stuart, and Mason Andelin joining forces for a round of 468.

In team trap, Midland tied for the second spot but fell by a solo target in the tiebreaker, 98-97. Audric Scheidel, Chase Carrere, Devin Huguenot, Grayson Stuart, and Michael Martinez had a round of 492.

Sporting clays saw another third-place finish for Midland. The group of Devin Huguenot, Adin Doll, Grayson Stuart, Dalton Blaha, and Chase Carrere combined for a score of 448.

Individually, Midland had a pair of event winners in Brayden Bliss (doubles trap) and Mason Andelin (doubles skeet). Devin Huguenot, Grayson Stuart, Chase Carrere, and Adin Doll finished in the Top 10 of the HOA while Amy Cawley was the top female shooter for the Warriors, placing third.

"This was probably the most prepared we have been for this shoot in a long time," commented head coach Jake McThenia. "We had three solid training weeks and then competition. As expected, we kept it close on the line games. Picking up a few more targets would have been great but we had to take what we shot. The sporting clays course was a true mental test, 98% of the targets we have seen before in practice and other competitions. We just had a few mental errors and overthinking of targets. Overall, it was a good start to the year, we need to clean up a few things and get ready for our home event next week."

Up next, Midland will host its annual invitational shoot. The 2023 Midland Invitational will take place in Lincoln, Nebraska in two weeks. Competition of the two-day event gets underway on Friday, September 23 at Lincoln Trap and Skeet.
