Bio

A 1936 Midland graduate, Speck Nelson was a two-year All-Conference quarterback earning four letters in football.  Four more letters were won in track and three others in basketball.  He returned to Midland as a football coach to lead the famed 1941 “Little Giants” to an undefeated, untied season.  Midland’s first unbeaten team went for 3570 yards in nine games and averaged a first down on every other play.  Hailed as the greatest team to ever wear orange and black, his 1941 Warriors earned national attention.  Speck Nelson is admired as an educator, coach, churchman, and molder of youth.  For 30 years he taught and coached at North High School in Omaha.  Active in his church, he advanced the cause of bringing Christian influences to all athletic competitions.
