Bio

Larry Holmes, '74, participated in football, track and field, and baseball while at Midland. In football, Holmes was a quarterback in 1970 before moving to split end from 1971-73. In 1970, he recorded 692 yards of total offense as a quarterback and from '71-'73, he recorded 950 receiving yards and scored 10 touchdowns. An outfielder in baseball, Holmes participated in '71, '72, and '73. In track, he ran the 60-yard dash and the 300-yard dash in '71 and '72. Larry earned a total of 9 letters during his four-year career at MLC. In 1974, Holmes was a member of the Chicago Fire, a World Football League team. Larry was hired by the Harvey Public Schools in Harvey, IL, in 1975. He has remained in Harvey, working at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School as an Athletic Director, Department Chair, Dean of Students, and Coach. Over the course of the past 30+ years, Larry has been instrumental in developing elementary and middle school-aged student-athletes. He has guided basketball teams to 32 regional championships, 24 sectional championships, and 20 state appearances, including 2 state championships. In 2005, Thornton High School recognized Brooks Middle School, with Holmes at the lead, as the vital instrument of their #1 ranking in USA Today. Larry's philosophy for success comes directly from the classroom, a belief he acquired at MLC. Larry Holmes is inducted into the Warrior Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding athletic achievements.
