In 1940, Wilma Gimmestad, ’39, was invited to chair the Department of Physical Education for Women at Midland College. She accepted this task and began to develop a physical education program that would become a very important part of the total liberal arts education at Midland. Through her efforts, both major and minor programs of study in physical education were developed at Midland during the mid-1940s. Wilma remained at Midland until 1957 when she was asked to join the Department of Physical Education for Women at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Throughout her life, Wilma has served in key leadership positions in numerous physical education professional associations. She is inducted into the Midland Warrior Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of her outstanding pioneering effort in the area of physical education at Midland College and throughout the United States.
