Bio

Dr. Robert Benne, ’59, was an English and German major who lettered in football, basketball, track, and baseball.  His abilities in these sports made him an “M” Club member as well as the holder of the rushing record in football for a number of years.  Bob also participated in numerous non-athletic activities while at Midland including student government, the German Club, the Lutheran Student Association, dormitory council, and as president of the Kappa Phi social fraternity.  His success as a Midland athlete and student foreshadowed his success in the professional arena.  Bob is Jordan Trexler Professor of Religion at Roanoke College, chairman of the Religion and Philosophy Department, and director of its Center for Church and Society.  He was named “Outstanding Professor” at Roanoke in 1985 and served as the first National Endowment for the Humanities Distinguished Lecturer at Midland in 1988.  Bob is a worthy candidate for induction into the Hall of Fame.
