Warriors Play Three Duals in Kansas

McPHERSON, Kan. – Midland University took to the courts in Kansas over the weekend, facing Kansas Wesleyan University, Bethel College, and McPherson College. The Warriors opened their three-day trip through the Sunflower State with a 5-2 victory over KWU in Salina. On Saturday, they fell to Bethel, 4-1, in North Newton, and on Sunday, they wrapped up the trip with a 4-2 loss to McPherson.

Friday: Midland 5, Kansas Wesleyan 2

The Warriors secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Benjamin Starman and Joren Stevens edged Luke Craft and Adam Hanson in a tiebreaker (7-6 [7-4]), while Jaime De Diego and Daniel Liebig earned a decisive victory over Raul Davalos-Gavino and Jack Hanson (6-2).

In singles play, Stevens claimed a straight-set victory at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1) over Davalos-Gavino. Starman followed suit at No. 2, defeating Hanson (7-5, 6-1). Liebig needed a tiebreaker in the opening set but secured the win at No. 3 over Craft (7-6 [7-2], 6-2). Andrew Hammer rounded out Midland's scoring with a dominant performance at No. 6, sweeping Jack Hanson (6-3, 6-0).

Saturday: Bethel 4, Midland 1

Midland started strong, winning two of three doubles matches. Stevens and Starman defeated Zaidh Zihar and Petr Kollar at No. 1 (6-3), while Liebig and De Diego took down Billy Haoda and James Menard at No. 2 (6-1).

However, Bethel controlled singles play, winning at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to clinch the dual. Stevens (No. 1) and Starman (No. 2) were leading their respective matches when the Threshers secured the team victory.

Sunday: McPherson 4, Midland 2

Starman and Stevens continued their strong doubles play with a victory at No. 1 over Celien Botlan and Oscar Brouwer (7-6). Cayden Brandner-Stanton and Hammer secured the doubles point with a win at No. 3 against Malik Brown and Balazs Temesvari (6-2).

In singles action, McPherson earned wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 to claim the dual. Starman provided Midland's lone singles victory, defeating Brouwer in straight sets at No. 2 (6-2, 6-4). The No. 6 singles match (Brandner-Stanton) was left unfinished with Midland leading.

Midland will return to action next week as it travels to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for its spring break matches. The Warriors will play four duals, beginning Tuesday, March 11, against Marietta. Other scheduled opponents include Tennessee-Chattanooga, Salve Regina, and Gettysburg.
